Slice of the Arctic

A wildlife and landscape photo-tour in the snowy peaks of the Scottish Highlands.

The Cairngorms National Park is unique for many reasons but it is the central massif – the boulder-strewn corries, the wind-sculpted ice fields and the arctic wildlife – that makes this place something extra special. The weather moulds the landscape and provides access – or not – to those who wish to explore its secrets.

The Scottish Highlands is the only place in Britain where Ptarmigan – or mountain grouse – can be found. These hardy arctic specialists spend all year in this hostile environment blending perfectly with the surroundings as they change. In winter, constant snow cover means that to avoid predation, they must stay camouflaged in their perfect white plumage. Similar tactics are adopted by our other principal target, the mountain hare. These are our only native hare and have their UK stronghold on the upland slopes of the Cairngorms region. With careful approach and favourable conditions, we can often stalk surprisingly close, but like the weather, mountain hares are known for their fickle temperament!

Our short visit into the Scottish uplands coincides with the height of the snowfall and the best of the winter light. We’re reliant on good weather but the rewards are spectacular images and experiences available nowhere else. You’ll be tired, you may be frustrated but you’ll be happy!
