These Arctic Islands are amongst the last remaining great wilderness areas on earth. A land where glaciers are mirrored in pristine waters and the King of the Arctic - the polar bear - roams the vast expanse of sea ice.
Our mission for this expedition is simple: to spend the maximum amount of time in polar bear habitat. We will be using a relatively small vessel chartered ourselves offering a completely flexible itinerary dedicated to photography and the best possible chance of polar bear encounters on the pack ice.
You should be aware that this is not a 'tourist cruise' and that we will dedicate almost all of our time looking for polar bears. It may be that we find several bears congregating around a recent kill for example, in which case we will drop anchor and may stay with the action for two days or more.
As we will not be sharing the ship with anyone else, we can decide what we want to do and how long we would like to spend in any given situation. This therefore promises to be a unique and exciting prospect and allows us to enjoy our photography at a relaxed pace without the pressure of having to move on to the next location.
Polar bear photography will be done from the deck of the ship. Indeed, if a polar bear is spotted ashore then we are not permitted to land. Our zodiac cruises however, allow us to experience the arctic waters at a more intimate level and to photograph the spectacular scenery. Other likely wildlife includes walrus, seals and some seabirds.
Ultimately, we are interested in three goals - polar bears, pack ice and exquisite light. This tour offers us the best chance of all three.

You must be in good general health. The expedition is mostly ship-based and physically not very demanding. To join most excursions, you must be able to get up and down the steep gangway from the ship to board the Zodiacs. Staff will assist you in and out of the boats. Ashore it can be slippery and rocky. You are travelling in remote areas without access to sophisticated medical facilities.
Cabins will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, allocated in the order bookings are received. All main deck cabins are clean and comfortable and are offered with single occupancy. Main deck cabins are a mix between en-suite and shared facilities. Upper deck cabins are both en-suite and of a slightly higher standard and are only available to couples or those willing to share.
“I'd been to Svalbard with Northshots once before, and though that trip was amazing, had witnessed the fickle weather and difficulty finding wildlife for myself, so knew first hand what a second trip might be like. But boy, when it all comes together it really comes together! A journey from Little Auks to Blue Whales, with Humpbacks, Polar Bear, Walrus and Arctic fox, and beautiful light and calving glaciers along the way. And second time around, you really do take a lot more of it in. I can't make 2013, but if you run this trip again I'll almost certainly be on it. Thanks again for a great time.”
