Iceland is a country with so many facets, a photographer could spend a lifetime just scratching its surface. Teeming seabird colonies, cascading waterfalls that make the ground shudder, iceberg lagoons and all set against a backdrop of glistening glaciers and restless geology. Coupled to almost 24-hour daylight and Iceland’s famous dynamic weather, this is a photo-tour where only the unpredictable is predictable.
It’s easy to forget that after the British Isles, Iceland is Europe’s largest island and with this in mind, our photographic attention will focus on just one region: the spectacular south-west. Caressed by the warming effects of the gulf stream, Iceland’s landscape is surprisingly lush with green meadows and tundra-like moorland - dissected by thundering rivers and waterfalls – all inching their way to the rugged coastline and feeding the island’s rich marine life.
Our tour will embrace Iceland’s unique coastal landscapes, big skies, geological wonders and surprisingly approachable bird life. This is a wide-ranging nature photography tour which avoids extensive travel, instead concentrating on extracting the very most from this primeval landscape of ice and fire.
PLEASE NOTE: This tour is designed for serious photographers who want to make the best use of the exciting early and late lighting that Iceland offers. You should therefore be prepared to work long and irregular hours with meal times being built around photography sessions and rest periods being built in at flexible times. You should also be aware that we will be photographing both landscapes and birds in equal measure so a varied photographic outlook is essential to get the most from this tour.

All accommodation, all meals, transport, tuition, ferry fares, entry fees.
International flights, alcoholic drinks, insurance and items of a personal nature
Spectacular waterfalls, dramatic coastlines, ice-filled lagoons and cultural landscapes. Wildlife targets include puffins, fulmars, waders, skuas, arctic terns, whooper swans, harlequin ducks, eiders and red-throated divers.
Although there will be little compulsory walking, the more adventurous might decide to ascend some of the hills surrounding the waterfall sites for a better viewpoint. The same applies for accessing some of the better positions for coastal and bird photography. The primary consideration is that of body clock adjustment. In good weather we will be working very late and very early with rests in the middle of the day.
Clean, comfortable hotels with mostly en-suite facilities. Our accommodation is primarily set in rural areas close to our key shooting locations and is of a good standard without being extravagant.
“This was another fantastic Northshots trip! I loved the locations and the variety of both landscape and bird photography. We had a great group of people and saw some amazing sights, and had lots of laughs and a fair amount of abuse (mainly from Pete!) Mark and Pete are a hilarious double act - brilliant guides and very entertaining. They both did a great job (despite the lack of sleep) and went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that we all got the most out of this trip - particularly with the early morning/late night sessions.”
