There are photographic subjects and then there are the truly iconic photographic subjects. Musk oxen – those most hardy of herbivores – live in some of the most inhospitable places on earth. Yet that very fact makes them one of the most alluring subjects.
High up in the hills of Norway’s Dovrefjell National Park, Europe’s only remaining herd of musk oxen survive. Set against spectacular winter backdrops, these arctic specialists eke out a living and it is against this precarious existence that we portray their lives in camera.
This really is a tour for those intent on capturing these unique mammals in their winter environment. You need to be fit and you need to be dedicated. It will be cold and it will be hard work, but ultimately, this is a photographic opportunity of a lifetime.

Musk oxen in dramatic winter conditions
This tour demands a high level of fitness. You will be spending prolonged periods in very cold weather and having to walk through potentially deep snow, sometimes uphill.
This tour is focused on serious photography and our accommodation has been chosen to provide quick access to our shooting location. We will take sole occupancy of a large traditional Norwegian cabin which is basic but clean and comfortable. Rooms are shared but with an option for single accommodation in an annex building.
“This is a holiday which though physically demanding is well worth the effort to view prehistoric creatures in a stunning landscape. Overall an experience we will never forget (in a good way!)”
