There are birds and there are birds. And when it comes to photography there is really only one bird: the clown of the sea, or the Atlantic puffin. These charismatic auks spend most of the year out at sea; it is only during a few months each summer that they don their finest dinner suits and return to land to raise the next generation. It is only polite for us to honour their brief concession to terra firma by photographing them in perhaps the finest setting across their range: Fair Isle, off the coast of mainland Shetland.
This dedicated tour focuses almost exclusively on puffins. You will shoot puffin portraits, puffins in flight, puffin behaviour and puffin interaction. It’s fair to say that you should only sign up for this tour if you like puffins! The species list is not as extensive as many of our tours but the photographic possibilities are endless and if this is a species you’ve always wanted to photograph seriously, this is the tour for you.

Insurance, alcoholic drinks, personal items and transfers to/from Lerwick ferry if applicable.
A unique in-depth photographic exploration of Atlantic puffins in a variety of settings and at varying times of day.
This tour demands only reasonable fitness but you should be aware that most of our time will be spent in exposed locations relatively close to the cliff edge where the puffins breed. You should therefore be comfortable in such situations.
In Sumburgh our hotel is a traditional lodge with excellent facilities and a warm welcome. On Fair Isle we stay in the recently built bird observatory with modern facilities and excellent family cuisine. All rooms are en-suite and of a good standard.
