May- Mountain Hare, Cairngorm, Scotland
Just when you thought you'd seen the last snowy pictures! Mountain hares are fickle creatures. For the most part, they're seen disappearing over a distant ridge at the first sign of human presence. But occasionally, just occasionally, you stumble on a 'sitter'. This is an individual that for some inexplicable reason (at least no-one has ever explained it to me), just well... sits. And doesn't move. After half an hour this hare did move; it stretched, ran around in a wide circle, came back to where it started, snuggled down in its snowhole and went back to sleep. The following day I found this individual again and watched as it high-tailed it over that ridge!
