Northshots offers a range of purpose-designed photography hides and sites enabling in-depth photography of some of Scotland’s most celebrated species. Our network of photography hides are positioned for optimum lighting, viewpoint and background and are set amidst stunning scenery in the Cairngorms National Park. Hides are available for photographers of all abilities and levels of equipment, but it should be noted that for most wildlife subjects, a lens of minimum 300mm is required. A sturdy tripod will also be needed along with a willingness to spend extended periods inside the hide remaining quiet.

Set in a mature pine woodland with natural backgrounds and perches. A range of images can be obtained with squirrels feeding, running and perched. This hide delivers optimum results when there is snow cover but is also workable at other times for photographers looking for authentic woodland images.

A ground-level hide set on the edge of a pine forest with squirrels coming to drinking pool and forging their own reflections. If wind is high or water frozen preventing a reflection shot, photographers can switch to other squirrel hides.

A ground-level hide set on the edge of a pine forest with opportunities for squirrels running, jumping and climbing trees. An entirely natural setting with clean backgrounds. Squirrels will visit all day but are usually most active until mid-afternoon.

An open setting (no hide) at feeding station on edge of pine forest/open bog. Photographers can shoot either with the light or in the afternoon, shoot backlit into a dark natural background. A range of natural perches will be supplied and the best chance of snow is January, February and March. The site is available throughout the winter and can be combined with red squirrel photography. The site is easily accessible by a short walk and secure car parking is available.
Ideal lens: 500mm (300mm minimum).

Two hides set in open woodland clearings with stunning natural backgrounds and perches providing opportunities for a wide range of images both backlit and front lit. Possible species include chaffinch, greenfinch, goldfinch, bullfinch, siskin, coal tit, blue tit, great tit, treecreeper, jay.
Available: All year (feeding is usually less intense during the breeding season)

Unique close-up perspective of this attractive woodland bird set in natural birch woodland. A wide variety of images is possible including wide-angle.

A unique opportunity to photograph one of Scotland's most charismatic raptors using a specially built hide overlooking natural perches with a clean background. Feeding and flight shots are possible. This site is away from the nest so requires no licence. Photographers should be prepared to spend a minimum of 5 hours in the hide.
Ideal camera/camera lens combination: full frame/300mm for flight; full frame/500mm for perched.
