Wild Wonders rolls on!
July 5 2010
This time in Prague at a rather splendid setting beside the Rudolfinum. The outdoor exhibition featuring 100 images from the Wild Wonders collection will be in situ until August 22...so if you're in the area...On another note, I'm behind with blogging thanks to 3 recent trips to photograph (in order): very little, rather alot of gannets and some splendid sea eagles. Communication & Collaboration.
May 29 2010
They're just two words right? No, I don't think they are. I think they are THE two words when it comes to furthering both conservation and photography's role within it. Pool resources, exchange ideas, optimise efficiency - that's Collaboration. And then there's the Communication bit, and that's the bit that excites me.I've just spent two days at the opening of the Wild Wonders of Europe inaugural outdoor exhibition in The Hague. After the ceremonial stuff (which I have to say was a lump in the throat moment), I sat and watched reactions to the larger than life images. Young, old, man, woman, every shade of skin, every cultural background (Holland is a culturally complex country), they all stopped and looked. Some didn't stay long, some stayed for hours. The common reaction? A smile. Now that's Communication.

Wild Wonders of Europe book offer!
April 27 2010
I am delighted to announce the publication of the Wild Wonders of Europe flagship book. Printed in seven languages, this unique record of Europe's largely undiscovered natural heritage, is something of a revelation - even to me!From the polar bears of arctic Svalbard to the sea turtles of the Mediterranean; from the wild bison of Poland to the snow-covered glaciers of the Caucasus – for the first time ever, the wild beauty of Europe’s landscapes and the immense diversity of its wildlife is being shown to the world.
Our soon-to-be launched store will feature the book but in the meantime, we're delighted to be able to offer copies at the discounted price of £24-99 inc p&p (RRP £29-99). Sorry, this is UK only.
Please e-mail your order: http://www.northshots.com/contact.asp
National Geographic portfolio!
April 16 2010
No not mine! Well, not entirely mine. This months National Geographic Magazine features a conservation portfolio from the Wild Wonders of Europe project. Now I'm not bitter and twisted (yeah right) but I had a double-page spread in the first draft. Now I'm left with...wait for it...a red squirrel! But nothing wrong with that - as far as I'm concerned, the rustic tree rodent is a true Wild Wonder of Europe (ahem)!See the online gallery at: http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2010/05/european-wildlife/europe-photography
Big thanks to Alladale!
March 16 2010
Sometimes life is too tough!Subsequent to my blogpost of March 8, I spent the weekend in absolute luxury, thanks to the kind hospitality of the owner of Alladale Wilderness Reserve in Sutherland. Along with the two WWE competition winners, Janne and Marcus, plus my son Sam, I sunk into the sumptuous surroundings of Ghillies Rest, one of two recently built eco-lodges on Alladale. Top cuisine was shipped into us each day (although I had the onerous task of re-heating it) whilst we got cosy in front of the roaring fire. Oh...and we did a bit of photography too - up close with red deer and the reserve's most efficient habitat managers, the wild boar (which as you can see below, fully merit their status as Dangerous Wild Animals!)
A great weekend and if you're looking for a cosy Highland retreat, you couldn't do much better than Alladale.
Thanks to Paul and his team - I hope we weren't too much trouble!

Wildphotos - a warm feeling.
October 26 2009
Spent a most enjoyable (and inspiring) weekend at the Wildphotos symposium in London - hello to anyone who attended! The event was also sobering. Niall Benvie hosted a session which underlined the increasing fragility of the go-it-alone photographer. By working collaboratively - with other photographers and visual media specialists - over recent years, I've found myself becoming more productive, more effective and with even a danger of being profitable!
Could I have produced the book below with an initial print run of 100,000 copies on my own? I don't think so.
