About Us

Northshots was established in 1999 by Peter Cairns and his wife Amanda from their base at Ballintean in the Scottish Highlands. Over a decade on, Peter and Amanda remain firmly involved in the day to day running of the business, assisted by a few willing (and able!) helpers.

Northshots not only delivers high-quality imagery for a wide variety of end-users, our knowledge and expertise is passed on to others through our range of photography experiences. We’re also passionate about communicating topical conservation issues … to anyone who will listen and more importantly, to those who won't! Projects such as Tooth & Claw, Highland Tiger and Wild Wonders of Europe underline our commitment to visual communication. Our involvement with 2020VISION is our most ambitious undertaking to date.

Against this backdrop, our products include:

Nature and Wildlife Stock Images

We offer reproduction licences for wildlife and landscape images from Scotland and northern Europe, as well as coverage of nature-based tourism, land management and human-wildlife interaction.

Conservation Photo Stories

We offer commissioned reproduction of well-researched image and text features on subjects as diverse as ecotourism, deer management and species reintroductions. Amongst others, our clients include:

  • Book & magazine publishers
  • Conservation and land management agencies
  • Advertising and interpretation consultants
  • Education and scientific organisations

Photography Merchandise

Our exciting range of books has recently been expanded with the publishing of CALEDONIA, a visual journey through Scotland's primeval forest. We also offer a range of greetings cards, prints and other products featuring Northshots’ photography in our online store.

And for photographers...

Get fantastic images and pick up some great tips on our wildlife and landscape photography courses in the Scottish Highlands, around Scotland and in northern Europe.  Our base, in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, is a truly special place where we provide a real photographic adventure in friendly surroundings.

Self-catering & Photography Hide Rental

If you'd prefer a less structured approach, why not come and stay in our lovely self-catering cottage here at Ballintean, or if you’re simply visiting the Cairngorms, you can rent one of our photography hides.
